Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve tried to cover anything and everything elsewhere on this site (please look around), but here are the answers to some of the most Frequently Asked Questions we are asked. Does your question relate to:

REGISTRATION

I’m having trouble registering. I’m getting some sort of error telling me my privacy setting are not allowing me to register and I need to enable cookies. What’s that all about? How do I fix it?

Our registration system requires that your web browser allow “cookies” (at least during the registration process). To enable them, follow the link below, find the web browser and operating system that applies to you, and follow the instructions. This should take care of the problem, but if not, please don’s hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to assist you:

Can I pay with a credit/debit card, or do I have to have a PayPal account?

We use PayPal’s merchant services to process our registrations, but you do NOT need to have a PayPal account to register. After completing your registration and clicking the “Pay Online” button, you’ll end up on this screen prompting you to log in to your PayPal account. Simply click the “Pay with Debit or Credit Card” button and you’ll be able to enter your credit card information on the following screen.

Check Out as a Guest

I’m trying to pay with a credit card (not PayPal) and am getting the following error message: “The card you entered cannot be used for this payment. Please use a different credit or debit card.

This message is generated when the card you are using is tied to an existing PayPal account. You either need to log in to your PayPal account and pay with it there, remove the card from your PayPal account and then “Check Out as a Guest” again, or use a different card. More info…

PACKET PICKUP

Can someone else pick up my race packet for me? Can I pick up a race packet for someone else?

Sure. But if you are the person picking up a packet for someone else, please be 100% sure they are aware of this, so they don’t show up looking for their packet only to find out someone picked it up for them without their knowledge. This happens every year, without fail. View this year’s Packet Pickup schedule.

HEADPHONES/DOGS/STROLLERS/BANDITING

Can I run with headphones?

Runner safety has always been, and will continue to be, the top priority for our event. For this reason, the use of personal music devices during the running of the Turtle Krawl is strongly discouraged. That said, people run with headphones all the time, and no one is going to physically stop you from doing so at the Turtle Krawl. If you do decide to run with headphones, please keep the volume low so you can hear what is going on around you. Be smart and be safe.

Can I run with a stroller?

The Turtle Krawl is a family-friendly race, but based on feedback from previous participants and due to the large number of people who now participate in the race, we do not allow running with strollers for safety reasons. If you would like to WALK the race non-competitively while pushing a stroller, you may do so, but please start at the very back of the field.

Can I run with my dog? Can I bring my dog to watch?

Unfortunately, Nance Park (where the race finishes) is not dog-friendly, so any spectator dogs will need to be somewhere else on the course, outside of the park. You may not run the race with your dog for this and other safety related reasons, unless of course your dog is a certified Service Dog. Service Dogs are always welcome.

Can I participate in a wheelchair?

Competitive wheelchair racers are capable of reaching speeds over 20 mph. Some very large races (ie, the Boston Marathon) have a wheelchair division which is really its own race, as they finish WAY ahead of the fastest runners. We do not have a wheelchair division at the Turtle Krawl, and like bicycles, rollerblades, skateboards and so on, no one may participate in a racing wheelchair. That said, if you would like to participate non-competitively or walk and push someone in a wheelchair, you are more than welcome to do so! Please start at the back of the field for safety reasons.

COACHING/BANDITING

Can I “coach” someone and run some or all of the race without registering?

Participating in a race without registering is called “banditing” the race. This is not allowed, not only for financial reasons (the Turtle Krawl is a fundraiser, after all), but also for safety reasons. Imagine if only 200 people registered for a race and another 2000 people ran it bandit – there wouldn’t be enough water and medical support available for everyone. If a bandit runner is injured (to the point of losing consciousness) on the course, without wearing a race number, it is more difficult to identify him and get him medical attention. So in a nutshell, please don’t run in the Turtle Krawl without registering.

Regarding the coaching question, we understand that a coach may want to run with someone without the coach’s time being recorded. Ideally, both the coach and student will register for the race, but we are happy to handle this on a case-by-case basis. Just contact us, and we’ll work something out and probably give you a bib number (with no timing D-tag) for a reduced rate. EVERY person participating in the race needs to be wearing a Turtle Krawl bib for identification purposes.

MINIMUM PACE REQUIREMENTS

Is there a minimum pace requirement or a maximum time that I need to finish in?

Officially, no. Non-competitive walkers are welcome at the Turtle Krawl, but ideally, you should be able to keep about a 20 minute per mile (3 mph) pace. If you look at the Past Results, you will see that we typically have a dozen or so participants who take between 1 hour and 1:15 to finish the 3.1 mile course each year, and that is no problem at all. That said, A1A will only be closed from 7:30 until 8:30 AM, so be aware that the road may be open to traffic if you are not able to make it to approximately Mile 2.7 within one hour of the start. The Kids Run (they use the same finish line) also starts in the 8:30-8:45 time frame.

THE KIDS RUN

Do I need to register my kid(s) for the free Kids Run?

The Kids Run is part of the Space Coast Runners Youth Series and is available to all children 12 years and under. There are three different distances to choose from: 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile, and 1 mile, plus a 50 yard or so “Finish Line Sprint” for the little ones. There is no entry fee, but registration is required for the 1/4 – 1 mile distances. You can register on-site or in advance by filling out this form and bringing it with you. The Kids Run starts in the 8:30 – 8:45 AM time frame, so be near the finish line then and keep an ear out for the announcement when we are getting ready to start.

REFUNDS/TRANSFER REQUESTS

Can I get a refund?

Sorry, but all registrations are non-refundable, as explained the the terms and conditions you agreed to when you registered. This is standard for all races, sporting events, concerts, etc. Please remember that this is a fundraiser to benefit the volunteer-operated, not-for-profit Sea Turtle Preservation Society. We are sorry that you will not be able participate in the race for whatever reason, but hope you understand that your donation is still very much appreciated.

Can I transfer my registration to someone else?

Prior to September 1, all registration transfer requests will be honored. During the first week in September, we will process them on a case by case basis. Once bib numbers and timing chips (D-Tags) have been assigned and race packets have been stuffed (approximately one week before the race), no more registration transfers will be allowed. Thank you for understanding.

VIRTUAL RACING/BUYING A SHIRT/MEDAL/PRINT

Is there a virtual race option?

After receiving this question literally hundreds of times over the past few years, YES, we are now offering a virtual race option. If you are unable to attend the Turtle Krawl in person, you can still support the STPS by registering for our Turtle Krawl virtual race and completing your 5k whenever and wherever you want!

Can I buy a Turtle Krawl shirt?

We get this question a lot. If there are any shirts left over after the race, we will sell them at the STPS Sea Turtle House for $25 each. To guaranteed that you get a shirt, register for our virtual race.

Can I buy a Finisher Medal?

Optional Finisher Medals are only available to those who register and pre-order them while supplies last. All virtual race participants will also receive a Turtle Krawl shirt and Finisher Medal.

The Turtle Krawl artwork is awesome! Where can I buy a print?

Prints can be purchased directly from the artist, Mike “Nemo” Nemnich. You can contact him through his website. More information about the Turtle Krawl artwork can be found on the History of the Race page.

RACE PACKET SHIPPING

What if I can’t make it to the race and am unable to pick up my race packet, but I still want my shirt/tote/bib/medal?

We will hold on to unclaimed race packets at the STPS Sea Turtle House until 9/30. If you live out of town and won’t be able to pick up your race packet in person, we can mail your shirt to you if you make arrangements to cover the cost of shipping. During the week AFTER the race, call the Sea Turtle House at 321-676-1701, pay the shipping charge (usually around $7) by phone, and we’ll mail your race packet to you.

SHIRT EXCHANGES

My shirt doesn’t fit. Can I exchange it for a different size?

If there are still shirts available during packet pickup, you are welcome to exchange the shirt in your race packet with one of the ones remaining. If we don’t have the size you are looking for, hold on to the one that doesn’t fit, and beginning on October 1, we will allow people to exchange shirts with the ones from the race packets that were never claimed.

PROMOTING OTHER RACES

I’m a Race Director. Will you stuff our flyers/registration forms in your race packets?

Believe it or not, we get this request at least 20-25 times per year. Adding 3000 race forms to our race packets for each of those races would lead to 60,000-75,000 pieces of paper being wasted! Because of this tremendous waste (not to mention the time and space required to do all that stuffing), we no longer promote other races in our race packets. What we will do is make a post about your race on our facebook page (5000+ followers and counting) a week or two before your event if you send us the information a few days before you’d like us to post it. If you really, REALLY want to add something to our race packets, consider sponsoring the Turtle Krawl.
